No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here at Living Word! This Sunday (Sept 19) as we worship let’s think about the incredible majesty of God as the creator of everything! He is the giver of life to all and we worship Him in scripture, songs, and Pastor Brandon’s message. The children will continue to hear the story of God as they attend Children’s Sunday School after Pastor’s Children’s message. And don’t forget this is the special Sunday when Pastor Brandon will speak at the Mohave County Fair after our regular worship. Don’t miss this last day of the fair! We encourage all who plan to attend to wear a Thrivent Shirt which will help identify us as Living Word members. Don’t have a shirt? We have some extras that will be available after worship. Slip one on and continue your Sunday worship at the Mohave County Fair! See you Sunday!
We are looking forward to having YOU with us this coming Sunday, 9/12, as we gather together at Living Word. Children’s Sunday School begins this Sunday! After Pastor Brandon’s Children’s Message (which all the adults enjoy just as much as the kids! 😊), the children will go to their own special class! Bring your children, bring the neighbor’s children! Join us as we hear the Word of God and are reminded of the love of God and the grace we have received through Jesus Christ! Don’t forget we will have a brief Special Congregation Meeting following regular worship. We are excited about all the things God has been doing and will do in our congregation!
The Pause that Refreshes”
Yes, we know that was a famous slogan for a popular soft drink! But think about it in relation to worship with Living Word on Sunday mornings! As we end the summer months on this Labor Day weekend, there are so many things to do that would take our attention away from worship. Yet, here at Living Word as we hear the Word of God through songs, scripture and sermons, we are reminded of the love of God and the grace we have received through Jesus Christ. Join us as we worship together this Sunday. Really experience “the pause that refreshes”!
Welcome to Living Word on the last Sunday of August (August 29).

What a special worship and celebration is planned for this coming Sunday at Living Word! We will be ordaining and installing Pastor Brandon Scroggins as our new Pastor and honoring Pastor Michael Birnbaum as he looks forward to retirement. In addition to Pastors Brandon and Michael, we will have the pleasure of Pastor Dan Storvick joining us for this special worship. Pastor Michael will be delivering his farewell message.
After Pastor Brandon is ordained and installed for his work with us, Pastor Michael will be honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus at Living Word. A Pastor Emeritus is one who is retired but retains an honorary title corresponding to that held immediately before retirement. So Pastor Michael will always have a connection to Living Word Lutheran Church!
Following our special worship service, don’t miss out on the Reception and Fellowship time immediately following. Join us for a special dinner, requested by Pastor Michael and some fun fellowship time with our 3 Pastors! Bring your favorite potluck dish to share! Don’t forget there will be a special decorated box at the back of our worship area to drop in cards and notes as we say goodbye to Pastor Michael.
Celebrate with us!
The first Sunday in July happens to fall on July 4, so our worship will be filled with patriotic songs as we celebrate the freedoms God has blessed us with!
In addition, we will also celebrate the arrival of Pastor Brandon Scroggins as he leads our worship!
During our fellowship time following worship we will also honor those members of our church family who will be celebrating birthdays and/or anniversaries during the month of July.
We have much to celebrate so don’t miss Living Word this Sunday!

Trinity Sunday (May 30) is the first Sunday after Pentecost to honor the Holy Trinity—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although the word “trinity” does not appear in Scripture, it is taught in Matthew 28:18-20 and 2 Corinthians 13:14. On Trinity Sunday, we celebrate and honor the symbolic nature of the Trinity – which is God, the father; Jesus, the son; and the Holy Spirit. All of which are all separate entities upon themselves but are also one and the same entity. Join us as we worship together on this special Sunday!
Acts 2 describes a powerful wind and tongues of fire as the Holy Spirit was poured out on people from all over the world story!
Join us at Living Word as we gather in worship this coming Sunday, May 23, to celebrate the birth of the church-Pentecost! Wear the brightest red shirt or blouse that’s hanging in the back of your closet. It’s just made for this special day! Red is a visual reminder of the “tongues of fire" that empowered the apostles and others to proclaim the good news of Christ's resurrection in many languages to the crowds of pilgrims from many lands.
Don’t forget our special Congregational meeting to be held immediately following worship. We will plan Pastoral Transition as Pastor Michael anticipates his retirement. Our church is alive and healthy! Help us create the blueprint for our future.
After Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday, He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. Jesus then walked the Earth among His followers for forty days, continually teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven. The fortieth day, Jesus was eating, drinking and speaking among His followers. After all was spoken to His followers, Acts 1:9 states “And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight.”
We will honor ASCENSION SUNDAY as we worship this coming Sunday (5/16). Welcome to worship!

Do Lord
Chorus Do Lord O do Lord
O do remember me (O do Lord)
(Do Lord) do Lord
O do remember me
Do Lord O do Lord
O do remember me
Way beyond the blue
I've got a home in glory land
That outshines the sun
I've got a home in glory land
That outshines the sun
I've got a home in glory land
That outshines the sun
Way beyond the blue
I took Jesus as my Savior
You take Him too
I took Jesus as my Savior
You take Him too
I took Jesus as my Savior
You take Him too
While He's calling you

Congregation Update 5-14-20
Dear Living Word Family,
On Monday of this week Arizona Governor Ducey issued guidance for places of worship during this continued coronavirus pandemic. The document is included in this week’s Congregation update. We are in compliance with all areas mentioned in the guidance, so will continue offering our church family the option of worshipping together in a small group setting.
For members who will be joining us in our worship area, please take note of some special changes begun last week that will continue for the present:
-
We will be following the same abbreviated worship pattern we have been using during the COVID pandemic.
-
Frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, tables, restrooms, etc. are cleaned with disinfectant wipes before worship.
-
We have moved the chairs farther apart to allow for appropriate social distancing. Only family groups should move chairs to allow them to sit together. Otherwise, please respect the social distancing we are providing.
-
Hand sanitizer is available and you will be encouraged to use it both before and after worship!
-
If you have a mask, please feel free to bring it with you and wear it during worship if you wish.
-
There will be no group communion during worship. Pastor will distribute Fellowship Communion cups to individuals after worship has concluded.
-
Instead of being passed, offering plates will be available at the back of our worship area so you can drop in your offering as you enter or leave worship.
-
We will not have coffee or snack fellowship either before or after worship. At the conclusion of worship and communion distribution, you are encouraged to step outside if you wish to visit with others.
Recognizing that some members of our congregation may not be comfortable resuming group worship yet, even small group worship, of course we will continue to live-stream our service to the Living Word Facebook page so you can worship from home. However, if you would like to “join” us for worship in another manner, we encourage you to drive to the church and participate in worship from your car while watching the live stream worship via your cell phone, iPad or laptop using the church internet. As has been our custom, wearing masks, we will come to your car to pass out worship guides before worship and again after worship so Pastor Michael can distribute communion Fellowship Cups.
Our topic this week is God Made Visible and the gospel text is John 14:15-21. As we continue to face the unique challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, may we always remember to thank God shepherding us through these times of change.
Your Church Council,
Ken, Bob, Sharon, Rosie and Eileen

May7, 2020 KEMA Day of Prayer - Kingman, AZ
May 9, 2020
Dear Living Word Family,
When Council met this week, we spent time discussing Gov. Ducey’s plans for Arizona’s gradual economic reopening, allowing retail businesses to partially re-open starting Friday, May 8. In order to begin “expanded in-person operations”, the business must implement social distancing and sanitization measures. After careful consideration, Council determined it would be appropriate to begin a gradual re-opening of our worship area beginning Sunday, May 10, Mother’s Day.
For members who will be joining us in our worship area, please take note of some special changes you will experience:
-
We will be following the same abbreviated worship pattern we have been using during the COVID pandemic.
-
We have moved the chairs farther apart to allow for appropriate social distancing. Only family groups should move chairs to allow them to sit together. Otherwise, please respect the social distancing we are providing.

Dear Living Word Family,
On Wednesday 4/29, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey held a news briefing and announced his decision to extend Arizona’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected Order until May 15, 2020. In compliance with that order, we will continue live streaming our worship services to our Facebook page for at least the next two weeks. and to make arrangements to continue this new avenue of publicizing our church and worship even after the COVID crisis.
If you plan to worship from the comfort of your home, (perhaps in your PJ’s?), please participate in communion using bread and juice or wine from home. However, if you would like to “join” us for worship, we encourage you to drive to the church and participate in worship from your car while watching the live stream worship via your cell phone, iPad or laptop using the church internet. Each week we have had several cars in our lot during worship! If you plan to join us in your car from our parking lot, we ask you to allow at least one empty space between cars in order to follow appropriate social distancing guidelines. Wearing masks, we will come to your car to pass out worship guides before worship and again after worship so Pastor Michael can distribute communion Fellowship Cups.
At the Wednesday news briefing, Governor Ducey also outlined plans to continue Arizona’s gradual economic reopening, allowing retail businesses to begin partial operations starting next week. Church Council will be meeting next week and carefully considering the guidelines to determine when it will be safe to gradually resume our group worship. Highest importance will be placed upon recommendations for social distancing and sanitation.

Dear Living Word Family,
During these weeks of COVID 19 pandemic, we continue to follow the guidelines of our governor’s “Stay at home. Stay Healthy” order. Each week our worship services will be live streamed to our Facebook page so you can worship from the comfort of your home. If you worship from home, please participate in communion using bread and juice or wine from home.
If you would like to “join” us for worship, we encourage you to drive to the church and participate in worship from your car while watching the live stream worship via your cell phone or laptop using the church internet. Each week we have had several cars in our lot during worship! If you plan to join us in your car from our parking lot, we ask you to allow at least one empty space between cars in order to follow appropriate social distancing guidelines. Wearing masks, we will come to your car after worship to distribute our special communion Fellowship Cups blessed by Pastor Michael during worship.
We all know that buildings are not the church. Rather, it is the people who are the church. As Pastor Michael reminded us it is important for us to continue being the church by keeping in contact with each other by phone visits with as many of our church family as we can. If any needs are identified, please let us know.
Pastor and Council members are closely following recently announced plans to “Open Up America Again” in stages. As soon as our governor's guidelines permit, we will be opening up the sanctuary again for those wishing to worship with "social distancing" while continuing parking lot and streaming Facebook worship. We will REALLY “open up” with our "Easter II: The Resurrection of the Church", complete with Easter Breakfast and Resurrecting the Alleluias someday soon. The church council will determine and communicate that scheduling.
Your Church Council,
Ken, Bob, Sharon, Rosie and Eileen
April 18, 2020
Below is the worship guide for tomorrow's service. For anyone attending the “parking lot” worship, printed copies of the worship guide will be distributed before worship. A reminder to read the text John 20: 19-31 in advance of the service if you are worshiping at home.
Pastor will also have a children's talk during the worship service. Please encourage the children to join us.
April 16, 2020
Dear Living Word Family,
As the Arizona “Stay at Home, Stay Healthy” order continues, so does our changed style of worship! We will continue to live stream worship services to our Facebook page so you can watch from the comfort of your home. We also encourage those who wish to “join” us for worship in your car in our parking lot to participate in worship from the car via their cell phone or laptop.
If you plan to join us in your car from our parking lot, we ask you to allow at least one empty space between cars in order to follow appropriate social distancing guidelines. Wearing masks, we will come to your car after worship to distribute our special communion Fellowship Cups blessed by Pastor Michael during worship. If you worship from home, and would like the special communion Fellowship cups delivered to your home along with a Communion at home worship guide, please contact Pastor Michael (509-710-3283) or Eileen Pressler (928-486-8511).
Our life together as a congregation has been disrupted by this pandemic. Daily life has been interrupted. We may be feeling anxious or even afraid. Our ability to gather has been restricted. Although we cannot visit in person, we encourage each of us to make contact by phone with at least one other church family. Share casual conversation, check on needs, share prayer. We are the church together!
Know that Pastor Michael is here for us. Although it is not wise for him to do in-person visits he is happy to visit by phone. Please contact him if you have any need.
During this time apart, if at all possible, we encourage you to continue your giving. We have several members who have mailed personal checks to our mailing address or have arranged Bill Pay through their bank. Please check the April newsletter for our mailing address or information about how to set up Bill Pay.
Pastor Michael would also like to sincerely thank the congregation for their prayers before and during his successful heart procedure earlier this week. He is recovering and very much looking forward to being "back in the saddle" this weekend!
REMEMBER, it won't be long and our church family will be called back together to celebrate Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Church -- AND the Alleluias!!

Ken, Bob, Sharon, Rosie, Eileen

Dear Living Word Family,
This year, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we are not able to be together to recall the solemn events of Good Friday at a Traditional Tenebrae worship-a service of darkness. However, be sure to log in to our Living Word Facebook page for virtual worship led by Pastor Michael. The service was pre-recorded and will be available any time today.
Easter is a symbol of hope, renewal, and new life. And Easter will soon be here!
We joyfully invite you to join us for worship on Easter Sunday which will be live streamed on Easter Sunday beginning at 10 AM. You may worship with us by logging in to Facebook on Living Word Lutheran Church Kingman from your home or joining us in your car in our parking lot and watching the worship “live” on your cell phone or laptop. Below is our Easter Worship guide to help you follow along, sing joyful hymns and join in as we celebrate together -- but apart -- to prevent further spread of the coronavirus!
If you plan to join us in your car from our parking lot, we ask you to allow at least one empty space between cars in order to follow appropriate social distancing guidelines. Wearing masks, we will come to your car after worship to distribute our special communion Fellowship Cups blessed by Pastor Michael during Easter worship. If you worship from home, please participate in communion using bread and juice or wine from home.
Our Easter celebration this year will be different. But we can and will still celebrate the blessings of Christ’s Resurrection! THIS Easter Sunday we are celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus! He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!
As soon as we are able to worship together again we will be having a big Easter Service to celebrate "The Resurrection of the CHURCH!" complete with our usual Easter Breakfast and resurrection of the "alleluias" for the children. He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!

Dear Living Word Family,
Holy Week here at Living Word began with virtual worship of Palm Sunday complete with parking lot communion!
Although we will not be having group worship as usual on Maundy Thursday, please log in to our Facebook page on Good Friday and join us for a virtual Tenebrae Worship-a service of Darkness. Tenebrae recreates the emotional aspects of the passion story and will reflect on the seven dying words of Jesus. Attached is a brief worship guide that will help you follow along with the service, as well as lyrics for the hymn “O Sacred Head Now Wounded”. Pastor Michael recorded the service earlier and it will be available for your participation anytime you can log in on Good Friday. It is our hope this solemn Tenebrae worship will help you anticipate the joy of the ultimate victory of Christ’s resurrection. Easter is coming!

April 1, 2020
Dear Living Word family,
As we are all aware, social-distancing guidelines have been extended at least through the month of April and Gov. Ducey has issued a stay-at-home order for our state. Therefore, our Council made the difficult decision to discontinue group worship on Sunday mornings until further notice.
However, we WILL be having worship on Palm Sunday April 5! Here are the plans:
-
At 10 AM Pastor Michael will be leading a devotional service including a message and blessing of Communion elements. The worship will be streamed to our Facebook page so you may watch on your computer, iPad or iPhone from home. However, you are also cordially invited to drive to the church and park in our lot to watch the worship service from your phone in your car! This will assure appropriate social distancing!
-
At approximately 10:30, we will be in the lot to pass out our traditional Palm fronds, some Palm Crosses and a pre-packaged Fellowship Cup that contains a wafer and juice blessed by Pastor, so you will be able to commune in your car. It is acceptable to order take-out from a local restaurant, so do not hesitate to consider participating in our parking lot version of take out worship and communion!
-
If you would prefer to watch worship from home and come to the church later for a parking lot Palm Frond, Palm Cross and communion, please contact Pastor Michael (509-710-3283) or Eileen Pressler (928-486-8511). We could meet you at the parking lot at 5 PM.
“They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of Israel!" John 12:1

Dear Living Word Family,
Yesterday, President Trump announced the federal government will be extending its social-distancing guidelines through April 30. The decision was made at the recommendation of the COVID 19 Task Force.
Based on the president’s announcement, Gov. Ducey’s judgment to close Arizona schools for the balance of the school year and the fact that numerous cases have been identified in Mohave County, Council has made the difficult decision to discontinue group worship on Sunday mornings until further notice. As previously announced, there will be no Mid-week Lenten devotions on April 1.
We are aware that next Sunday is Palm Sunday, Holy Week follows, and Easter Sunday next! We are working on several different ideas for worship during this important time. Stay tuned for more information!
In the meantime, remember that God’s Hope is guaranteed and lasting, and He is in our corner! And don’t forget to wash your hands and don’t touch your face!

March 27, 2020
Dear Living Word family,
As we are all aware, the global spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19, has become a central topic of discussion and concern for many of us. It has caused us to think about the things we take for granted and to rethink how we go about the practices of our daily lives. In the church, this pandemic has caused us to consider new ways to approach what have been longstanding practices and traditions. Churches in our immediate area are doing a variety of things including closing for the pandemic, providing services online, being open for prayer, counseling and/or personal worship in small groups, parking lot services, etc.
Here at Living Word we have made the decision to continue small group worship on Sundays while maintaining CDC recommendations for social distancing, hand washing, etc., as well as posting Pastor Michael’s messages on our Facebook page so those who choose to avoid groups are able to participate. Council members are closely monitoring ongoing developments and will make changes as necessary. There will be no mid-week Lenten devotions on April 1. The outing to Stations of the Cross planned for 3/29 has been postponed to a later date to be announced.
In our efforts to consider different ways to worship together, we urge each of us to remember tithing/offering as an important part of our worship life. By tithing/offering, we give ourselves a regular reminder that we should depend on God. In good times, tithing helps us remember the source of all our blessings and in bad, it helps to remember God’s faithfulness and trust in the Lord for all our needs.
As we re-think our previous patterns, here are several methods we could easily use to continue to make our offerings on a regular basis:
-
Of course, you could continue to send individual checks not to our worship address but to our mailing address below.
-
You could send your tithe digitally by using the Venmo app, a free app for your cell phone. Venmo works by linking with your bank account and/or a credit or debit card. Transactions made with either your bank account, debit card, or with your Venmo balance are free, while a standard 3 percent fee is added to credit card transactions.
-
Or you could continue to contribute by using something as simple as Bill Pay, available through your bank. This easy method allows us to send our offerings even if we are worshipping at home by viewing Facebook, on vacation, or just forgot to bring our checkbook to church with us! Here is the simple process:
-
Contact your bank (either in person or via their website) to set up bill pay services.
-
During the bill pay set up, your bank will ask for the address and perhaps the telephone number of the church. It is important to use only the following mailing address for all donations:
Living Word Lutheran Church
3880 Stockton Hill Rd. 103-300
Kingman, Arizona 86409
928-753-5952
-
Make your contributions. The bill payment service will send your check directly to our Living Word mailing address and even pay the postage!
During this stressful time we can’t do everything we’re accustomed to doing. We know that will change when the pandemic diminishes. For now, we must find joy and consistency in opportunities God has given us. If you are preferring to stay at home and have any needs we can help with please let us know. Need groceries delivered? House visit? Personal prayer??? OR if you would like to be a phone caller to assist us in calling through our church list on a regular basis to just "check on" every one, please contact Eileen Pressler our Parish Administrator at ewpressler@suddenlink.net or 928-486-8511 to help minister in this way from your home.
May the God of all comfort, power, control and grace bless and keep each and every one of us during this time.

Dear LW family:
Your Council members have listened carefully to COVID-19 updates presented today by the President Trump’s task force of experts and reviewed Arizona Governor Ducey’s recommendations for our state.
Arizona has reported 18 positive cases of COVID-19 as of Monday (March 16), according to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). Currently, the level of community spread in the state is "minimal." At present, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Mohave county.
ADHS now recommends the cancellation or postponement of gatherings of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks (starting Sunday, March 15). Schools are closed state-wide from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27.
Here is an update on how our Living Word family will worship this coming week. Our purpose is to allow everyone to choose their level of comfort!
-
Worship services will continue as scheduled. We will discontinue food fellowship after Sunday worship and before Wednesday Lenten devotions until the emphasis on “social distancing” is relaxed. Sunday worship will be at 10 AM and Wednesday Lenten devotions will not include a meal but will begin at noon and again at 6 PM.
-
Handshakes and hugs are optional during “Share the Peace” as is joining hands during the Lord’s Prayer. If you wish, feel free to raise your hands in prayer instead!
-
Pastor Michael’s message will continue to be live streamed to our Facebook page. This was a success last week and the message was viewed more than 70 times!
-
Holy Communion will be served each Sunday as usual. If you are unable to attend Sunday worship and desire home Communion, please contact Pastor.
-
Yoga has been discontinued until after Easter.
-
At present, we are still anticipating a church outing and travel together to see the "Stations of the Cross" at the Shrine of St. Joseph of the Mountains in Yarnell and have "lunch on the road" together -- more details to come! Will meet at church at 8:30 am to carpool. A Lenten adventure together! Stay tuned!
-
Obviously, we continue to emphasize the importance of covering coughs and sneezes, hand washing, and use of hand sanitizer. Also, feel free to sit in one of the front rows of our worship area to participate in some “social distancing”! And, of course, if you are ill, stay home! Check out our Facebook page to worship!
During this time of change, please remember that if you would like to send your tithes and offerings, please use our post office box address:
Living Word Lutheran Church, 3880 Stockton Hill Road 103-300, Kingman, AZ 86409
We encourage each of us to continue to pray for our nation, our leaders, and our healthcare workers. Take comfort in the words of Paul:
“6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 6-7
Blessings to each one of you,
Your Church Council
